General Motors Co. in Detroit reported the company and its dealers delivered 2.6 million vehicles in the U.S. in 2023, representing a 14 percent year-over-year sales increase.
“GM has tremendous momentum,” says Marissa West, senior vice president and president, North America for GM. “We grew our market share in 2023, maintaining strong pricing and low incentives. We led the industry in trucks and had great success with our affordable SUVs like the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envista, some of today’s hottest-selling vehicles.”
GM also reported it led the industry in total sales and was the top selling manufacturer of trucks, full-size pickups, full-size SUVs, affordable SUVs, and fleet vehicles.
The company stated one of the reasons for its improved sales in 2023 was due to the “affordable SUV” market. The Chevrolet brand’s Trax and Trailblazer accounted for 26 percent of the affordable SUV market. The Buick Envista saw its sales increase by 69 percent. The latter model also had the highest percentage (26 percent) of owners aged 18 to 35 across all GM nameplates.
Chevrolet reported brand sales were up 13 percent for the year. Fourth quarter sales were down less than 1 percent compared to strong 2022 Q4 sales.
Cadillac reported similar numbers for 2023. Overall sales were up 9 percent for the year, but fourth quarter sales were down 7 percent compared to strong 2022 Q4 sales. The Escalade saw a sales increase 4 percent for the year. This represents the model’s strongest sales year since 2007.
The Buick brand reported a sales increase of 61 percent for 2023, including much higher sales per dealer. GM states Buick is the fastest-growing mainstream brand in the industry.
The brand also reported Q4 sales that showed a 57 percent increase over the fourth quarter of 2022. Overall, Enclave sales were up 42 percent for Q4. Envision sales were up 23 percent for Q4, as well.
GMC sales rose 9 percent for 2023. This represents the best sales year since 2019. Q4 sales, compared to 2022, were down 7 percent. Sierra’s Q4 sales were up 22 percent.
GM’s Envolve EV brand saw a sales increase 20 percent in 2023. That makes the model tops in commercial fleet deliveries for the second straight year. And the Chevrolet Blazer EV became the first GM EV to earn police pursuit certification.
GM executives expect industry sales to remain strong in 2024 as the company expands customer choice with new vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ.
West says GM’s sales growth was driven, in part, by an overall strong North American vehicle market in 2023. The industry sold about 16 million vehicles last year. Company experts predict 2024 sales staying in the 16 million range. This will come at a time when GM is scaling up production of several EV vehicles, including the Cadillac Lyriq, the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the Cadillac Escalade IQ, the Cadillac Celestiq, and the Cadillac Optiq.
GM also will be introducing new or redesigned internal combustion engine (ICE) models in 2024. They include the GMC Acadia, the Chevrolet Equinox, the Buick Envision, the Chevrolet Traverse, the Cadillac CT5, the GMC Yukon, the Chevrolet Tahoe, and the Chevrolet Suburban.
