In a new report, the French bulldog was named the top breed in the city of Detroit for the third year in a row, according to the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) 2023 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in the U.S.
The French Bulldog also was recognized as the number one pup in Miami and Denver.
According to the AKC, the Beagle is making strides in the city of Detroit, shooting up in the ranks from number 27 in 2022 to number 12 in 2023, just shy of making the top 10.
“Beagles are a great addition to families, especially ones that already have other dogs” says Gina DiNardo, executive secretary Gina DiNardo of the AKC. “It is not a surprise they jumped up to the 12th spot this year.”

AKC used registration data from the city of Detroit zip codes as specified by U.S. Postal Service.
According to the American Kennel Club, the French Bulldog also was America’s overall most popular breed for the second consecutive year,
Since overtaking the Labrador retriever as the most popular breed, the French bulldog’s popularity has continued to surge, says DiNardo. The breed is “playful, adaptable, and has an even temperament.” The breed is very popular among city dwellers, as they’re also portable and get along with almost anyone.
