For the fourth year in a row, the French Bulldog took Detroit’s top spot in the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) 2024 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in the U.S.

The Cane Corso’s popularity has grown in Detroit, mirroring a national trend. The large working dog now has joined the top five most popular breeds in the Motor City. Additionally, the Brittany Spaniel went from the 27th most popular breed to taking over the 14th spot on the list. In 2022, it was the 53rd most popular breed.

“Despite their similar growth in popularity, the French Bulldog and Cane Corso are loved for two different reasons,” says Gina DiNardo, executive secretary of the AKC. “Frenchies are the perfect companion breed, and if you’re looking for a loyal naturally protective breed that is also a big mushy marshmallow, then the Cane Corso is the breed for you.”

The French Bulldog also was recognized as the No. 1 pup in Houston and Miami.
