Fourth Wall, a new bar and microcinema located at 15421 Mack Ave. on Detroit’s far east side near the border with Grosse Pointe, is opening on Nov. 16. It will be one of city’s only spaces dedicated to film.

The bar/microcinema will show movies continuously during its open hours with dedicated daily showtimes when patrons can watch movies with the sound on at the bar. No reservations, cover, or tickets are needed, and the space is meant to be casual and communal.

Owners Kar Green and Matt Mergener plan to expand both the bar and its programming in 2024 with the addition of a one-screen theater nearby on Mack Avenue.

For its launch, Fourth Wall initially will focus on genre cinema, but plans to expand its hours and programming toward the end of 2023 and early 2024 with community screenings, festivals, guest speakers, and more.

Its menu will be wine forward with an extensive beer and non-alcoholic selection. A full cocktail bar also will be available upstairs at its sister bar, Apartment Disco.

Fourth Wall will feature several partnerships and collaborations. Detroit pop-up favorite Gajiza Dumplins — which is in the process of opening its own space on Warren Avene in 2024 — will provide the food for Fourth Wall Thursday-Sunday, as well as provide food for Detroit’s only southeast Asian brunch on Sundays.

Cinema Lamont — the Detroit-based nonprofit focused on bringing new international cinema to Detroit — will program double features every Sunday at Fourth Wall. In addition to in-bar screenings, Fourth Wall will be presenting films at various locations around Detroit, including its current monthly film series (co-presented with Cinema Lamont) inside the historic firefighters’ game room at the Foundation Hotel on Larned Street in downtown Detroit.

Fourth Wall also will feature rotating local artwork on its walls. Detroit-based muralist Ouizi (Louise Jones) and Detroit-based photographer Jon DeBoer will be the first two artists featured in the space.

Ouizi’s artwork will run November and December 2023. DeBoer’s work will be featured in January and February 2024. A full listing of films, food and artwork will be posted to the Fourth Wall website early next week prior to its soft opening fourthwalldetroit.com
