Father and son franchisees Paul and Jason Amell will open their ninth Checkers in southeastern Michigan, a fast-food hamburger restaurant, on Detroit’s east side next week with plans to open four more restaurants in the city within the next few years.

“People are excited that (Checkers is) coming back,” says Jason Amell. “The Checkers and Rally’s of today is a lot stronger than it was when it left. The brand is on top of its game right now.”

In 1999 Checkers and Rally’s, another popular hamburger chain, merged operations.

The restaurant, to be located at 16511 Harper Ave., was formerly a Taco Bell. Amell and his father opened their first Checkers’ restaurant in 2007, and have opened up four more eateries in Detroit.

Amell adds three more Checkers’ restaurants will open within the next year, with another restaurant scheduled to open within the next few years.

Checkers offers burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, and fries, among other items.

There are more than 30 Checkers’ restaurants in the metro Detroit area.

Tampa, Fla.-based Checkers & Rally's Restaurants Inc. has about 800 restaurants across the U.S.
