Eastern Market in Detroit has launched the “Authentic Eastern Market” campaign, a $15.5 million fundraising initiative designed to protect the market’s legacy while driving forward its economic and cultural influence.

Built on four pillars, the campaign seeks to strengthen the regional food economy, maintain racial equity by preserving affordable business spaces, maintain the district’s character, enhance the market’s infrastructure for vendors and visitors, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization.

“While our weekend markets are well-known, our mission extends far beyond a shopping destination,” says Katy Trudeau, president of Eastern Market. “Eastern Market is an anchor of Detroit’s economy, a platform for local entrepreneurs and a catalyst for regional food systems. The ‘Authentic Eastern Market’ campaign allows us to expand our reach, support small business owners, and ensure the market’s legacy for generations to come.”

The “Authentic Eastern Market” campaign will strengthen the market’s ability to support local businesses, enhance the visitor experience, create affordable space for entrepreneurs of color, and develop a more resilient food system across Michigan and the Midwest.

From infrastructure projects and entrepreneur training programs to expanded food access programs, the funds raised will directly support regional economic resilience while preserving the rich heritage of Eastern Market.

To date, key donors include the William Davidson Foundation, Max & Marjorie Fisher Foundation, Hudson Webber Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, Sun Communities, the Walters Family Foundation, and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation.

“Eastern Market’s story is Detroit’s story,” says Darin McKeever, president and CEO of the William Davison Foundation in Bloomfield Township. “By supporting the ‘Authentic Eastern Market’ campaign we are helping Eastern Market Partnership to ensure that one of Detroit’s cultural and economic gems remains strong.”
