DTE Energy’s new energy storage center at the site of its retired Trenton Channel Power Plant, a century-old coal-fired facility, will be powered by Powin’s 880 megawatt-hour system, using advanced battery storage technology.
The new battery system will be designed to deliver reliable, emission-free power to DTE’s 2.3 million electric customers in southeast Michigan.
Powin’s battery energy storage system will help DTE take a major step toward its goal of more than doubling its total energy storage capacity, while also supporting the State of Michigan’s target of 2.5GW of energy storage capacity by 2030.
The project, approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission, is a major milestone in DTE’s CleanVision plan to achieve net zero emissions.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, wind and solar accounted for 14 percent of U.S. electricity generation in 2022, and is expected to grow to 18 percent in 2024.
“We are deeply honored to have been selected by DTE as their trusted partner for this project,” says Jeff Waters, CEO of Powin, which is based in Portland. “We believe this project will serve as an inspiration for the entire utility sector, demonstrating the potential and impact of advanced energy storage solutions in achieving a sustainable energy future.”
Powin states it was selected for the project, in part, due to its comprehensive energy storage offerings, which encompass integrated hardware, advanced software controls, and extensive service packages.
“DTE’s Trenton Channel Energy Center will greatly benefit from Powin’s advanced technologies,” says Matt Paul, president and COO of DTE Electric. “This is an important project for our customers and communities, and we’re pleased to work with Powin to help make it a reality and bring us closer to our cleaner energy goals.”
The Trenton Channel Energy Center is projected to come online and be fully operational by 2026. Once completed, the project will rank among the largest standalone battery projects in the region.
