Detroit’s Shinola Hotel was named to Travel + Leisure’s new “It List.” It is the only Michigan location to be recognized by the magazine, which considers hundreds of properties around the globe. The list selects top new and renovated hotels and is available in the magazine’s March issue and online.
The boutique hotel opened in downtown Detroit’s shopping district along the lower Woodward corridor in early 2019. It has 129 rooms and suites, curated art collections by Library Street Collective, a local gallery, and six restaurants and bars from award-winning Andrew Carmellini of NoHo Hospitality.
“The beauty of staying at a hotel is that you can drop both your physical and emotional baggage and be the best version of yourself,” says Jacqueline Gifford, editor in chief of Travel + Leisure. “With over 70 honorees — including a Loire Valley château and a series of lodges in Bhutan — our annual It List is packed with hotels that make you feel spoiled, nurtured, and seamlessly connected to the outside world.”
Travel + Leisure editors scout hundreds of new hotels looking for those that offer a special, holistic experience based on location, ambiance, service, and amenities. The editors work with the magazine’s global network of travel writers and agents to narrow the list.
The 2020 list includes 19 hotels in the U.S. including four in California, three in New York, and two in Hawaii. Other winners are in Asbury Park, N.J.; Miami, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and others.
