DuMouchelles Fine Art Appraisers and Auctioneers next month will auction a collection of decorative accessories from the historic Adams Castle in Bloomfield Hills.

“These are mainly decorative accessories because Adams Castle will be for sale so the intention was to sell off some of the accessories before (the house) would be shown,” says Joan DuMouchelle-Walker, co-owner of DuMouchelles.

DuMouchelle-Walker says Valeria and Donald Bortz, the owners of Adams Castle, located off North Adams Road between Wattles and Big Beaver, have been collecting items from their travels for more than 40 years. She says the items in the collection are mostly decorative, and are made of silver, porcelain, and crystal.

DuMouchelle-Walker says the proportions of the items are large and not often seen in typical homes. She says standout pieces include a life-size Xian warrior statue from China, Art Deco bronze statuary by the Parisian sculptor Demetre Chiparus, and andiron sets that are of very large proportions.

“We have a pair of Danish porcelain urns that are 26 inches high, we have a vase which is 26 inches high, and the candelabra is 24 inches high which would be too large in scale for most homes,” DuMouchelle-Walker says. “There are some items of very good quality.”

She says the collection will be auctioned Oct. 17.

Valeria and Donald Bortz are the former owners of Warren-based Bortz Health Care, which operated 11 nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The Bortz’s sold their family business in May.
