The farmers market that blocks road access through Kercheval Avenue at the border of Grosse Pointe Park and Detroit will be removed by November, and a gateway will be created following a joint development agreement signed by the mayors of both cities.
“We are very excited about our new partnership, which will improve the area and benefit residents in both Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park,” says Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. “It became clear during this process that we all share the common goal of creating a safe and attractive environment that links our communities in a neighborly way.”
As part of the agreement, Grosse Pointe Park will reopen access to Kercheval at Alter Road and construct a new permanent public market that is accessible for the entire block. Likewise, Detroit officials have agreed to remove abandoned structures and performance routine maintenance of properties along Alter, from Jefferson to Mack.
The city of Detroit will also install a landscaped traffic roundabout at Kercheval and Alter, which will complement the existing roundabout on Kercheval in Grosse Pointe Park. Officials will also work in collaboration with Grosse Pointe Park on issues such as traffic engineering, permitting, and planning for the area.
“This collaborative effort will result in our creating a seamless transition between Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park,” says Gregory Theokas, Grosse Pointe Park’s mayor pro tem.
