Detroit-based Hamilton Anderson Associates is serving as one of the architects, interior designer, and architectural designer for the new MGM National Harbor Casino and Hotel in National Harbor, Md., just south of Washington, D.C.
“We love to work on these new casino projects,” says Alicia Bayley, director of architecture at Hamilton Anderson. “They’re just really beautiful environments that you get to create. You don’t always have the opportunity to really push the creative limits.”
Hamilton Anderson is one of three design firms working on the facility, which is slated to open next year. Working primarily from their offices in Detroit, the firm is the architect of record for the casino floor, kitchen, three of the facility’s food and beverage venues, and a conservatory with a change out display similar to the conservatory at the Bellagio resort in Las Vegas. They also had early involvement with the layout design of the casino.
When complete, the multi-level, 950,000 square foot facility will include a 300-room hotel, a full-service spa, upscale retail spaces, casual and fine dining restaurants, a conference center, and a 400-seat theater. The complex sits on a nearly 23-acre site, and includes nearly 1.9 million square feet of parking.
Hamilton Anderson previously worked on MGM properties in Detroit and Las Vegas, along with the Greektown Casino and MotorCity Casino in Detroit.
“We’ve now amassed a very good portfolio of casinos that we’ve worked on,” Bayley says. “We’re just very familiar with what a casino is, how it needs to perform, what it needs to look like, and we know how to execute that.”
Hamilton Anderson will oversee and work with MGM throughout the construction of the National Harbor Casino and Hotel.
