Detroit-based Dykema, a large law firm with offices across Michigan and the country, announced today that it will join with Texas-based Cox Smith law firm, effective May 1.

“Cox Smith’s deep roots in Texas and Dykema’s robust national platform will significantly strengthen the depth of experience and service that the combined firm can offer our clients,” says Peter Kellett, chairman and CEO of Dykema.

The new, combined firm will operate under the name of Dykema, though the Texas office will be called Dykema Cox Smith initially. The combined firm will broaden the range of legal services available to clients, offering strategic initiatives in middle market mergers and acquisitions transactions; energy; infrastructure; automotive; government policy; financial services litigation; health care; and data privacy and cyber security.

Kellett says Cox Smith will bring its experience with industries such as financial services; oil, gas, and energy; and construction/manufacturing.

“We have practice strengths that complement one another and allow us to better serve clients as a combined entity,” says Deborah Williamson, managing director of Cox Smith. “Both of our firms emphasize and prioritize client service as a key differentiator.”

Dykema opened a Dallas office in 2007 with four attorneys and now has 27. The combination of firms will expand Dykema’s presence in Texas for both existing and new clients. The size of each firm will be doubled in Dallas, with San Antonio becoming one of Dykema’s largest offices.

The addition of Cox Smith’s lawyers will give the combined firm over 450 attorneys in 15 offices in California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and Washington, D.C.
