Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Begins Winter at Valade Season Jan. 5

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s Winter at Valade (WAV) celebration, which is presented by Friends of Robert C. Valade Park and features family-friendly programming every weekend, kicks off its season Jan. 5-7 with a medieval-themed Fire & Ice Festival.

The Fire & Ice Festival is the first of four themed Winter at Valade weekends this season.  In addition to the four themed weekends, guests can visit Valade Park every weekend through Feb. 25 for giant fires, marshmallow roasters, sledding, seasonal drinks and food, and special programming on Fridays and Saturdays.

Fireside Fridays during Winter at Valade feature an open mic, board games, trivia, and more. In keeping with the medieval feel of the upcoming weekend, trivia on Jan. 5 will have a fantasy theme and participants will compete for prizes and bragging rights. Self-Care Sundays feature a wide range of wellness programming, which includes hustle classes and polar walks. Food and beverage also will be available for purchase during Winter at Valade hours.

Managed by the non-profit Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, Robert C. Valade Park is a four-season destination located at 2670 Atwater along the East Riverfront in downtown Detroit.  The Fire & Ice Festival, as well as all winter programming, takes place Fridays from 4-9 p.m., Saturdays from noon-9 p.m., and Sundays from noon-7 p.m.

The Winter at Valade Fire & Ice-themed weekend will feature medieval fun with a winter twist, such as live performances and an ice carving competition. Guests also can purchase a turkey leg to eat and enjoy hands-on activities like archery, inflatable axe throwing, and ice carving.  Photo opportunities abound with characters such as Elsa from Frozen and Renaissance Fair performers wandering the park and a majestic throne intricately carved from blocks of solid ice.

The signature moment of the weekend will be the lighting of the seven-foot-tall Fire and Ice Tower, which will transform into a giant bonfire at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Limited sponsorships are still available here.
