Detroit Liquid Ventures Sponsoring 100th Bayview to Mackinac Race
Detroit Liquid Ventures has signed on as the official beer sponsor of the 100th running of the Bayview to Mackinac race Saturday and is launching Century Sail Ale, a commemorative low-alcohol, low-carb brew to keep captain and crew hydrated along the way, or for their finish line celebration.
The competition is officially called the 2024 Bayview Mackinac Race presented by National Fleet Services.
“I’m especially proud to support the 100th annual Bayview to Mackinac race — it’s an iconic event that’s an important part of Detroit’s past, present and future — it’s Pure Michigan all the way,” says Mark Rieth, president of Detroit Liquid Ventures. “Our full line of crisp, refreshing craft and non-alcoholic beers and natural energy drinks are a perfect complement to a glorious day spent racing on the Great Lakes, with the wind in your sail and, hopefully, blue skies above.”
Century Sail Ale is DLV’s exclusive new citrus blond “boat beer” featuring just 3.9 abv and low carbs.
“Century Sail Ale, like our N.A. beers, delivers the full beer flavor profile with no, or low, alcohol. They are ideal for a day in the sun, sailing, golfing, or anytime you thirst for a beer but want to stay fresh and hydrated,” Rieth says.
The Bayview to Mackinac race began in 1925 with fewer than a dozen boats (and only three that crossed the finish line). In the 99 years since, it’s become a marquee event for sailors and is the world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race.
“This growth in participation speaks volumes about the enduring appeal and significance of the sport of sailing and the race,” says Michael Helm, 2024 commodore of the Bayview Yacht Club. “While we anticipated an increase in the number of participants for our 100th, I attribute the immense response to a broader trend of people seeking outdoor activities and embracing the natural beauty that Michigan has to offer.”
Century Sail Ale is the latest brewed-in-Detroit beer from Detroit Liquid Ventures. In May, DLV released Arsenal of Democracy, a Detroit-style lager meant to celebrate Detroit’s efforts in World War II. DLV previously introduced a line of Irish style ales, including Old Head Red, Old Head Milk Chocolate Stout, and Old Head Extra Pale Ale. DLV’s FÜL Beverages offer non-alcoholic beers and natural sports drinks that are designed as a smarter alternative to quench any thirst at any time, while at the same time giving your body exactly what it needs to relax, recover or simply enjoy.
“I sometimes wish I could go back in time to the 185’s when Detroit was the brewing capital of America, or to the 1940s when Detroit men and women were laboring to turn the tide in WWII, or to 1925 when the inaugural Bayview to Mackinac race set sail,” says Rieth. “I can’t do that, but I can pay homage to those great Detroit moments, and many more like them, by brewing exceptional beverages that celebrate our Detroit past with a contemporary twist. I’d like to think those 1925 racers would like what they see, and taste, at this year’s event.”

Applied Intuition Launches All-terrain Autonomy Stack
Applied Intuition, a California-based provider of vehicle software to the automotive, trucking, construction, mining, agriculture and defense industries with an office in Detroit, has its new all-terrain autonomy stack solution that enables safe navigation in complex unstructured terrain.
Off-road autonomy is highly complex. The dynamic and inconsistent nature of off-road terrain can impact basic autonomous vehicle (AV) system functions like obstacle detection and avoidance, creating challenges for safe and efficient off-road navigation. Off-road environments also pose safety risks and put a high cognitive load on operators. Autonomy stacks can address reductions in manpower while contributing to operational efficiency and increased productivity across various industries. However, they require complex infrastructure and can be costly and challenging to develop and maintain in-house.
To help organizations navigate these challenges, Applied Intuition provides an off-road autonomy stack that can run on production hardware and navigate in real environments. The technology has been designed by a team of experts who understand both the latest machine learning (ML) techniques and the constraints of rugged environments. The stack consists of separately factored modules that can be individually integrated into a customer’s robotics system.
Applied Intuition’s newest offering includes software capabilities such as:
- Simultaneous localization and mapping: Enables a vehicle to understand rough, unstructured, and unmapped environments without requiring a consistent or accurate GPS signal.
- Perception and object tracking: Provides a high-fidelity holistic view of surrounding environments in real time, including semantic understanding and 3D geometric modeling, for both static terrain and dynamic objects.
- Sensor fusion and calibration: Collects data across multiple modalities using both traditional geometric and cutting-edge ML methods.
- Planning and controls: Navigates the vehicle along a safe and efficient path that avoids rollover, entanglement, and collision using an approach that is proven across multiple vehicle types and models.
Applied Intuition’s off-road stack works with the company’s base software platform, while supporting third-party integrations, secure environment testing and data management. Organizations can also use the off-road autonomy stack in conjunction with Applied Intuition’s definitive ADAS/AD toolchain for simulation-driven development. Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit Treats First Patient with New Device
Ohio-based Genetesis Inc. has launched the MICRO2 trial, marked by the enrollment of the trial’s first patient at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, under Drs. Edouard Daher, MD, and Nishtha Sareen, MD, MPH, FACC, FSCAI, both of whom are interventional cardiologists.
MICRO2 (Magnetocardiography as a Noninvasive Diagnostic Strategy for Suspected Myocardial Ischemia with the Absence of Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease) is a multicenter, prospective, observational study powered to validate magnetocardiography’s ability to detect myocardial ischemia caused by underlying coronary microvascular dysfunction. The study will compare the diagnostic performance of MCG to a reference standard of invasively measured Coronary Flow Reserve (CFR). MICRO2 is expected to enroll at least 135 patients and will be conducted with the support of at least six enrolling sites – Ascension St. John Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center, Saint Luke’s Health System Kansas City, The Christ Hospital, and University of Florida – and is funded by Genetesis, Inc.
Evidence clearly supports the recognition of CMD as a distinct clinical entity, but diagnosing CMD effectively poses a major challenge for the current standard of care, as traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease, like atherosclerosis, have not proven to correlate with the presence of CMD. For patients seeking a diagnosis, the first step in their journey typically involves being classified as suffering from ischemia with no evidence of obstructed arteries (INOCA).
“Many of the patients we speak to who suffer from CMD often describe a diagnostic journey that begins with being told their symptoms are non-cardiac due to a negative result on CCTA or invasive angiography. Unfortunately, these patients are being told something that is later proven to be untrue,” said Rhea Malhotra, Vice President of Product Development at Genetesis. “Offering these patients a 90-second diagnostic option for diagnosing ischemia that could be used at the beginning of this diagnostic journey would be a huge step forward in fixing this unmet clinical need today.”
INOCA is currently estimated to impact at least 4 million people in the United States today, with over 50% of these patients believed to suffer from some form of CMD. Worse still, there is overwhelming evidence demonstrating that these patients will see more physicians and have more hospitalizations than otherwise healthy people while suffering from measurably worse outcomes, both in terms of quality of life and long-term health. For reasons that are not entirely understood quite yet, the vast majority of these patients today are women.
The application of CardioFlux MCG for diagnosing these patients would represent a significant opportunity to reduce the cost and burden typically associated with a diagnosis without compromising on diagnostic accuracy, and if validated by MICRO2, could make the possibility of a diagnosis far more accessible than it currently is today.
MICRO2 trial enrollment is expected to close by the end of 2024, with results reported in Q1 of 2025. Positive results would be followed by a De Novo request for market authorization to FDA shortly thereafter, and if successful, would represent the first diagnostic to be FDA approved for this application.

Michigan Experiencing Emergency Blood Shortage
Versiti Blood Center of Michigan in Grtand Rapids has issued an emergency appeal for blood donations due to a dangerously low blood supply. Certain blood types have less than a day’s worth of availability, endangering the lives of local patients. Summer donations have dropped drastically, reaching a critical low. Last week, Versiti recorded its lowest donation count of the year. To meet the needs of hospitals and ensure they have enough blood for patients, 4,000 donors are urgently needed in the next seven days.
All blood types are needed, with O-positive and O-negative being the most in demand. O-positive is the most common blood type, while O-negative blood is the universal type that can be safely received by all patients in emergencies when the blood type is unknown.
In addition to unfilled appointments and a rise in cancellations and no-shows, Versiti’s partner hospitals have required a significant volume of blood this past month to support organ transplant procedures and other traumas.
What happens if blood is not available for patients?
When the local blood inventory gets as low as it is now, it jeopardizes the health and safety of patients who rely on life-saving blood transfusions. In some cases, hospitals are forced to postpone surgeries or delay critical treatments.
Trauma victims from car accidents or shootings are at the highest risk, as their survival often depends on a healthy blood inventory. If these types of cases occur in the coming days, we might not have the blood needed to keep them alive.
Patients undergoing organ transplants and battling cancer, and even mothers in labor, could face treatment delays or complications due to a limited blood supply.
To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 866-642-5663 or visit versiti.org. Walk-in donors are also welcome.
Donor center locations:
- Farmington Hills – 29305 Orchard Lake Rd.
- Grand Rapids – 1036 Fuller NE
- Grandville – 3140 Wilson SW
- Joseph – 2710 Cleveland Ave.
- Kalamazoo Area – 524 East Milham Ave.
- Saginaw – 1771 Tittabawassee Rd.
- Bay City Donor Center – 1017 North Johnson St.
- Midland Dow Diamond – 825 East Main St.
- Traverse City – 2575 Aero Park Dr.
- Gaylord – 133 W. Main St. Suite 101
Donating blood takes about an hour. Anyone aged 16 or older who is in good health and meets eligibility requirements is encouraged to give. Parental consent is required for donors aged 16 to donate blood. Donors should bring a photo ID that includes their birth date.
