51st Annual Outdoorama Coming to Novi Feb. 22-25

The 51st Outdoorama will be taking place Feb. 22-25 at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.

Among the attractions are lumberjacks, Big Buck Night East, a fishing simulator, live birds of prey, a trout pond, displays of boats and other outdoor gear, and educational seminars.

Conservation continues to be the cornerstone of Outdoorama, according to show organizers.

“For more than five decades Outdoorama has been catering to thousands of outdoors enthusiasts,” says Ben Nielson, show manager. “With the wacky winter weather we’ve had in Michigan this year, outdoors people are searching for fun activities to do, and this year’s show offers plenty of outdoors relief in an indoor setting to help you get ready for spring.”

The Outfitters Expo provides show patrons with nearly unlimited family vacation and adventure travel, including hunting and fishing destinations throughout North America and beyond.

On Saturday, deer hunters can learn how to process their own deer when Steve Francis, owner of Country Smokehouse in Almont, gives a demonstration on field dressing, skinning, butchering, and packaging a white-tailed deer.

Continual seminars are scheduled over the four days and cover topics ranging from fishing and hunting to grooming land for wildlife or hunting. All seminars are free with admission.

Headlining the All-Star Seminar Lineup are deer hunting experts Tim Andrus, Tony LaPratt, and Tom Richardson. On the fishing side of the seminars are professional walleye experts Mark Romanack, Mark Martin, Lance Valentine, as well as bass professional Wayne Carpenter.

Free Smoke Detectors Available for Pontiac Residents

The City of Pontiac is working with the Waterford Regional Fire Department to provide free smoke detectors for Pontiac residents in a collaborative effort to decrease the high fire fatality rate and keep the community safe.

“This is a great opportunity for our community’s residents to protect themselves and their families from the risk of home fires. We encourage everybody who’s in need of a smoke detector to utilize this program and get one free of charge,” says Pontiac Mayor Tim Greimel.

The smoke detectors are donated by Kidde Fire Safety and MI Prevention. The initiative was developed to decrease fire hazards among the community, promote safety in the area, and ensure smoke alarms were more accessible for homes. The free smoke detectors are also available to Waterford Township and Lake Angelus residents.

Interested parties can fill out a form online or in person and retrieve the free smoke detectors at Waterford Fire Department’s Main Headquarters. Residents will receive a bag with a smoke detector and/or carbon monoxide alarms, a pamphlet about fire safety, and arrange a scheduled time for installation with their local fire department.

The fire department is working with the City of Pontiac’s Billing Division so it is more convenient for residents to access the forms.

Ele’s Place — Ann Arbor Hosting Fundraiser May 4 to Support Grieving Youth

Ele’s Place – Ann Arbor will be hosting its seventh annual Derby Day Soirée on May 4, at Revel Run in Chelsea.

The event, which will include live coverage of the 150th Kentucky Derby, live and silent auctions, Southern-inspired cuisine, and a dance party, is the largest fundraiser of the year for Ele’s Place – Ann Arbor.

“Children and teens experience many of the same feelings that adults do when someone close to them dies, but they process grief in different ways,” says Bree Arvai, director of Ele’s Place – Ann Arbor. “At Ele’s Place, children, teens and their families have a safe space to connect with their peers, express their feelings and develop healthy coping skills after the death of a parent, sibling or someone close to them.”

Founded in Lansing in 1991, Ele’s Place has provided free peer grief support groups and in-school programming to more than 32,000 Michigan children, teens, young adults, and families.

“Events like the Derby Day Soirée help ensure that there is never a cost for families to participate in our programs,” says Arvai.

This year’s Derby Day Soirée is expected to draw more than 400 attendees and raise nearly $420,000 for area children and teens. To purchase tickets, visit elesplaceannarbor.org. To learn about opportunities for sponsorship, live or silent auction donations, or volunteering, contact Andrea Gerber, events coordinator, at agerber@elesplace.org.
