When the Detroit Tigers open the 2024 home season on April 5, 2024, against the Oakland Athletics, fans will be greeted by a new videoboard, sound system, and televisions throughout the Comerica Park concourse.
It replaces the existing scoreboard, which was the 18th largest in major league baseball. The ballpark also will receive new speakers that will be adjacent to the new videoboard, allowing for an enhanced audio experience throughout the ballpark, according to the team.
“Investing in a world-class entertainment experience at Comerica Park for Tigers fans is a top priority for our organization and we are excited to make these enhancements heading into next season,” says Ryan Gustafson, executive vice president and COO of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment. “Fans will see and hear a noticeable difference on opening day with a new videoboard more than double the size of the existing one, and significant advancements to the audio and television systems throughout the ballpark.”
The videoboard project began Dec. 14 and will continue through the winter. Daktronics, which designed the original scoreboard at Comerica Park, is the manufacturer of the new videoboard.
The new televisions throughout the Comerica Park concourse will feature advanced signal quality and additional channels, including live feeds of the Tigers’ minor league affiliate teams. The connected IPTV system also will be upgraded to provide a consistent and enhanced visual experience throughout the ballpark.
Along with the additional 9,500 square feet for the new videoboard, overall resolution also will be upgraded. The upper and lower portions of the board will create a high-definition viewing experience featuring 14.1 million pixels that are 33 percent closer together than the old scoreboard, which utilized 2.4 million pixels. The increased resolution and size will provide enhanced graphical displays of lineups, statistical notes, analytics, and more.
Members of the Tigers’ business operations visited ballparks across MLB to benchmark and gather best practices for making industry-leading video and audio advancements.
The Tigers will host the Oakland Athletics for 2024 opening day on April 5. Detroit will start the season on the road, playing at the Chicago White Sox (March 28, 30-31) and New York Mets (April 1-3).
