IKEA, an international home furnishings store, today announced the interior work is now done with the final stages of a 44,000-square-foot addition to be completed this summer to its Canton Township store at I-275 and Ford Road.

“It’s great now to see milestones inside the new space — as fixtures and racking are installed. This progress keeps us on track for our larger and enhanced shopping experience,” says Matt Hunsicker, IKEA’s Canton store manager.

The Canton IKEA opened in 2006 with 311,000 square feet of space, and with the expansion will now be about 355,000 square feet.

The project includes expanding the self-service furniture area as well as the home delivery area. Customer service operations will be moved to the new addition, as well.

IKEA will also increase the size of the solar array (solar farm) that was installed on top of the building three years ago. Nearly 800 panels will be added on the roof of the addition and, in total, the solar array will produce 1.4 million kWh (kilowatt-hour) of clean electricity every year.

The store remains open and operational during construction.
