Construction has begun on the new Buddy’s Original Detroit-Style Pizza restaurant in the Madison Building in Grand Circus Park, which is scheduled to open in late summer or fall.
This is the first downtown location for Buddy’s Pizza, which opened in 1946 on Conant Street as the original Detroit-style pizza brand. It will offer a quick lunch service for workers, theater and stadium crowds who may not have time for a full-service experience.
“The call for the original Detroit-style pizza downtown is being answered,” says Wes Pikula, chief brand officer at Buddy’s. “We want to accommodate those who may not have time for a full-service experience. Buddy’s will also offer catering to surrounding businesses and delivery for anyone who wants the convenience of the original Detroit-style pizza delivered right to their work space.”
Located in the heart of Grand Circus Park, the roughly 7,000-square-foot location at 1565 Broadway St., will have a capacity of 225 patrons. The space, which once housed Angelina Italian Bistro, will feature glass-partition walls that open onto a summer patio for seasonal dining. The restaurant also will have a separate area offering limited service where guests can grab a slice, a whole pie, salad, or other items for a quicker Buddy’s experience.
Buddy’s first began its legacy in 1946 at Buddy’s Rendezvous Pizzeria at Six Mile Road and Conant Street in Detroit, where Detroit-style pizza was conceived with a little resourcefulness and inspiration from the blue steel automotive industry pans in which the pizza is made. In addition to serving a variety of Buddy’s award-winning original Detroit-style pizzas, the new restaurant will feature a full menu including gluten-free pizza, salads, burgers and more.
