Oxford Capital Group in Chicago and Taconic Capital in New York, owners of The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit, today announced a $23 million transformation of the hotel is finished.
The work, which took almost a year to complete, was designed to offer a new, sleek, and sophisticated atmosphere to welcome hotel guests and visitors.
The project specifications feature a contemporary design from top to bottom, including fully refreshed guestrooms as well as more than 36,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, plus all public spaces within the 453-room property. The Gettys Group in Chicago served as the interior designer for the project.
“The hotel looks spectacular,” says Debra Schultz, general manager of The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit. “The Italian Renaissance design created by architect Louis Kamper in 1924 has been enriched with a soft cream color palette and patterns throughout the property.
“The hotel conveys a relaxed contemporary elegance in every guestroom, meeting space, and ballroom. This begins another new chapter for the historic hotel as we celebrate its 15th anniversary as The Westin Book Cadillac, and its 100th anniversary since its original opening.”
The historic hotel, which replaced the Cadillac Hotel in 1924, was developed by three brothers — Herbert, Frank, and J. Burgess Book Jr. After hosting movie stars, athletes, U.S. Presidents, and business titans, the hotel was closed in 1984.
It re-opened on Oct. 6, 2008 following a multi-million-dollar restoration by Cleveland-based Ferchill Group that was hailed at the time as one of the first important catalysts of Detroit’s rejuvenation. Over time, the hotel was acquired by Oxford Capital Group and Taconic Capital.
In addition to the hotel renovation, the new Sullivan’s Steakhouse opened in September inside the hotel on Washington Boulevard in the space formerly occupied by Roast. The hotel is located at the southeast corner of Washington Boulevard and Michigan Avenue.
Sullivan’s offers guests bone-in and hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, and signature cocktails. The other first floor retail space is currently under an exclusive agreement with a local restaurant operator which is expected to be announced soon. About 2,000 square feet of additional retail space is currently being marketed, with a likely tenant being a spa and/or a salon.
“It’s an exciting time to be in Detroit,” said John W. Rutledge, founder, chairman, and CEO of Oxford Capital Group and Oxford Hotels & Resorts. “Downtown Detroit is continuing its remarkable transformation with this newly refurbished Westin Book Cadillac project, as well as our recently completed Godfrey Corktown (Hotel), (the upcoming) Perennial Corktown Apartments, in addition to other restaurants, entertainment venues, and upscale city living options being developed.”
