Black Star Farms in Northern Michigan Launches Food Product Line


After a successful soft launch at several local grocery stores in Traverse City, northern Michigan-based winery Black Star Farms has announced the development of their own branded food products. The offerings will be distributed statewide next month by Traverse City-based Cherry Capital Foods.

In addition to being available at Black Star Farms’ Sutton Bay and Old Mission Peninsula tasting rooms, consumers can look for the winery’s hard apple cider granola, Leelanau coffee granola, sweet potato cashew crackers, or lentil sea salt crackers at stores across the state. The products were created by Executive Chef Cole Thornton.

“We are happy to have the partnership of Cherry Capital Foods who, along with Michigan State University Product Center, have been working with us through the development and launch stages of products that, prior to this, only our Inn guests were enjoying,” says Michael Lahti, Black Star’s CFO and business manager.

Exact stores that will carry the products have yet to be released, but Black Star Farms products can now be ordered online. The winery operates the Inn at Black Star Farms, a 10-room bed and breakfast located on 160 acres at Suttons Bay, and offers an array of wine, including such selections as Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir.

Cherry Capital Foods, a food distributor on Michigan products, sources local food from farms and distributes it to the marketplace. Product categories include fresh, frozen, or dried vegetables and fruits, tofu, beef, veal, pork, lamb, rabbit, chicken, duck, turkey, quail, and milk, butter, and cheeses from cows, goats, and sheep.
