Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak has been named the top hospital in Michigan as well as in metro Detroit, according to the 2014-15 Best Hospital Rankings by U.S. News & World Report.
“This is a marvelous achievement by our medical staff that highlights Beaumont Health System as an academic medical center,” says Dr. David Wood, the organization’s executive vice president and chief medical officer. “Through the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, we are training new doctors in the science of high quality medicine delivered with compassion — the hallmarks of a top-ranked hospital.”
The Royal Oak facility also received national rankings in cardiology and heart surgery (No. 25); diabetes and endocrinology (No. 16); gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery (No. 20); geriatrics (No. 24); gynecology (No. 44); nephrology, or kidney care (No. 37); neurology and neurosurgery (No. 35); orthopedics (No. 9); pulmonology (No. 22); and urology (No. 42).
The 2014-15 report considered nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide and only 144 hospitals performed well enough to be nationally ranked in one or more specialties.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. ranked No. 1 as the top hospital overall in the nation.
U.S. News made several changes to the rankings methodology this year, including adding new data and greater emphasis on patient safety, says Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor.
