Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe has received a $5 million boost in its creation of a hybrid surgical suite from James Anderson, CEO of Urban Science, and his wife Patricia Anderson. The gift will support the $19 million renovation to the hospital’s surgical center and will establish the James and Patricia Anderson Advanced Surgical Technology and Training Endowment Fund.
“The endowment will help ensure the hospital’s surgical teams stay ahead of the curve, learning and practicing leading-edge, technologic advances,” says James Anderson. “Patti and I want to be associated with the best. We feel Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe is the best in terms of quality and service.”
The gift is the largest the hospital has received. The plan to build the James and Patricia Anderson Surgical Center will encompass eight phases over 2 ½ years and includes a 900-square-foot hybrid surgical suite. The gift includes $3 million for the suite.
“A hybrid surgical suite, or operating room, is larger than traditional operating rooms and combines surgical equipment, tables, and lights with fixed advanced imaging systems,” says Dr. James Lynch, president of Beaumont, Grosse Pointe. “Surgical teams have the capability to perform a wide array of procedures ranging from a traditional open approach to a minimally invasive procedure.”
The suite will include a C-arm imaging system that rotates to provide front, back, and lateral views. It provides real-time, live views throughout surgery so clinicians can compare what they see before, during, and after a procedure. Larger operating rooms also allow medical students, residents, and fellows opportunities to observe and take part in procedures.
“When complete, the hybrid suite will enable our surgeons to quickly and efficiently move between minimally invasive and traditional surgeries,” says Dr. Nick Gilpin, chief medical officer of the hospital. “It will allow our surgical teams to address a broad range of conditions and injuries, including vascular, thoracic, and trauma.”
The James and Patricia Anderson Advanced Surgical Technology and Training Endowment Fund will provide resources to assist in acquiring new technologies and provide for ongoing training and continuing medical education for surgeons, anesthesiologists, interventionalists, nurses, technicians, and other members of the surgical team.
Beaumont Health has eight hospitals with 3,429 beds, 145 outpatient sites, and nearly 5,000 physicians, 38,000 employees, and 3,500 volunteers.
