FCA US LLC (Fiat Chrysler) and Ford Motor Co. today reported single-digit sales increases for the month of August over last year, while GM saw a slight decline.
FCA reported a 2 percent increase in sales (201,672 units), marking the automaker’s best August since 2002.
“In spite of a tough 2014 comparison and extreme stock market volatility, our dealer’s competitive spirit kicked in and propelled us to our 65th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases,” says Reid Bigland, head of U.S. sales for FCA. “Our Jeep brand turned in a double-digit increase while eight individual models, including four Jeep brand vehicles, set sales records. FCA US topped the 200,000-unit threshold in August for the second time this year.”
The Jeep Compass posted the largest percentage year over year increase of any Jeep brand vehicle in August. The Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Patriot, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Journey, Ram pickup truck, and Ram ProMaster van each recorded the best August sales ever.
General Motors Co. saw its sales drop .7 percent in August (270,480 units) when compared to sales in August 2014. Despite the drop, it was the best August sales since 2005, and the Acadia had its best August ever with sales up 10 percent. Sales of the Buick Enclave were up 27 percent last month compared year over year, marking the vehicle’s best August. The Cadillac SRX saw a sales increase of 52 percent year over year.
Fleet sales were down 24 percent on a 38 percent decline in rental deliveries.
Ford Motor Co. reported a 5 percent increase in August sales (234,237 units) when compared to sales in August 2014. It was the automaker’s best August in nine years.
“Customer demand for our newest vehicles made August a strong month for Ford,” says Mark LaNeve, vice president of U.S. marketing, sales, and service at Ford. “Improved availability helped make August the strongest sales month this year for F-Series. We also had our best month of Ford SUV sales in 12 years.”
The Ford F-Series saw a 5 percent increase in sales when compared year over year, its best August since 2006. Ford van sales increase by 70 percent last month compared to August 2014, driven primarily by the all-new Transit.
The Mustang saw a 70 percent increase in sales compared year over year. The automaker’s newest SUVs saw sales gains, with the Edge and Explorer up 36 percent and 22 percent, respectively. ​
