Atwater Brewery in Detroit today announced it is launching a line of hard seltzers — sparkling waters that come in three flavors — available in 12-ounce cans offering a 5.0 percent ABV and 100 calories.

Entering a growing market, hard seltzers are lower in calories relative to other alcoholic alternatives and gluten free. Atwater Brewery says the initial flavors are mango, cherry, and lime. Following a launch party today at Atwater’s facility in the Rivertown district (237 Jos Campau), the product will begin shipping to retailers this weekend.

As production ramps up, the new Seltzers, available in 12 packs, will be shipped across the Midwest.

“Hard Seltzers are a life-style choice that our Atwater customers told us they wanted,” says Mark Rieth, owner of Atwater Brewery. “Like our brews and spirits, Atwater’s Hard Seltzer is born in Detroit and is soon-to-be raised everywhere.”

The Seltzer brewing process isn’t entirely different from what Atwater is already doing with its line of beers. “We had the expertise and the facilities — expanding into hard seltzer was an easy decision for us, and one that we hope our customers will value and enjoy,” Rieth says.

The Atwater launch party, which begins at 5 p.m., is open to anyone 21 and over.
