Aspen Surgical, based in Caledonia, Mich. (south of Grand Rapids) has acquired BlueMed Medical Supplies in Montreal, Canada. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Aspen was established in 1999 and manufactures surgical disposables focused on improving patient and health care provider safety and efficiency in the hospital and surgery center environment.

It offers blades and scalpels, personal protective equipment, probe covers and needle guides, surgical marking pens, orthopedic positioners, basic wound care, and instrument care products.

“BlueMed is a highly synergistic fit for Aspen in terms of manufacturing and commercial operations,” says Jason Krieser, CEO of Aspen. “Coming shortly after our acquisitions of both Precept Medical and Protek Medical, the BlueMed offering further enhances our portfolio of high-quality products that address infection prevention in the acute care environment at a time when reducing cross-contamination has never been more important.”

BlueMed manufacturers disposable shoe covers and other personal protection products. Its offerings are used in health care, pharmaceutical, and lab facilities where infection prevention and cross-contamination are concerns.

“We are very excited to join forces with Aspen and contribute over a decade of product and automation development in the shoe cover business,” says Michel Kassar, president of BlueMed.

Aspen, which has offices in Puerto Rico, Iowa, and Mexico, is backed by Audax Private Equity, an alternative investment manager with offices in Boston, New York, and San Francisco.
