The Wayne State University Board of Governors has approved the establishment of a new Master of Science in Data Science and Business Analytics program, offered jointly by the College of Engineering and the Mike Ilitch School of Business. Admission procedures have been launched, and the program will begin with the Fall semester.

“While a lot of programs have been created in recent years, most of them tend to focus on just technology or analytics or the business case,” says Ratna Babu Chinnam, one of the directors of Wayne State’s Big Data Group. “The novel and interdisciplinary MSDSBA program is designed to give graduates a balanced core of computing, business, statistics, and operations research skills to identify, analyze, and solve analytics problems.”

The program will offer specialized training to help students integrate data and analytics skills in an interdisciplinary way, which will better prepare them for business, industry, and government careers. Chinnam believes there is a “critical shortage” of data-driven talent in the Midwest, and hopes the program will “produce a stream of high-quality graduates for years to come.”

The MSDSBA program requires students to complete a minimum of 30 credits, including 24 credits in coursework and a six-credit practicum final project with an industry partner.

Applicants must meet requirements for admission to the Wayne State University Graduate School, including a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in engineering or business from an accredited college or university. Students from all science, technology, engineering, and math programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
