A group of business and civic organizations today launched the inaugural LuminoCITY, a series of illuminated technical art pieces installed throughout Detroit’s central business district. The installation runs through Feb. 18.
LuminoCITY consists of 16 illuminated technical pieces of varying sizes, shapes, and capabilities, the largest of which is more than 100 feet tall. The program is the result of collaboration led by Quicken Loans and Bedrock, with DTE Energy, Detroit’s Parks and Recreation Department, Detroit Economic Growth Corp., and the Downtown Detroit Partnership.
The brightly colored architectural installations were created from aluminum and fabric and establish oasis points that move to a curated soundtrack and come to life with video mapping. The sculptures are intended for human interaction, including dancing, listening, and watching.
“With 800,000 people downtown for the Detroit Auto Show (Jan. 14-22), it is an opportunity for the creation of new events and experiences. We want to promote the best things to do in the city to the large audience of visitors and metro Detroiters,” says Helen Johnson, vice president of community activation for Quicken Loans and Bedrock. “LuminoCITY will help create an environment that encourages people to walk and discover downtown, and hopefully increase visits to public spaces, businesses, restaurants, retailers, cultural institutions, galleries, and events.”
The technology was built by Los Angeles-based Stereobot, a temporary outdoor public space activation company best known for their artwork at the Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival.
The LuminoCITY activation sites were selected in two-to-five-minute walking intervals, and additionally connect more than 200 local restaurants, retailers, public spaces, offices, and residential buildings. The installations are located in Capitol Park, Grand Circus Park, Hart Plaza, the Hudson’s Site, Woodward Avenue, and Cobo Center.
