Old Woodward Cellar, a new shop featuring more than 1,000 wines ranging in price from $15 to $15,000 per bottle, has opened in downtown Birmingham.
The 2,200-square-foot shop, 912 S. Old Woodward Ave. (south of the 555 Building), features a section with the top 50 wines consumed in Birmingham-based restaurants, wines considered “best in breed,” and rare and collectible wines with a focus on cult California reds, burgundy, barolo, Rhône, Bordeaux, and Champagne selections.
“We are dedicated to finding the very best wines from around the world in every region,” says Nick Apone, a sommelier and owner of Old Woodward Cellar. “Our main focus is on the wines of California, France, and Italy, and all of the wine we stock is sampled before it is purchased. We only sell what we believe in.”
Along with selling wine, Old Woodward Cellar will offer events in a private 450-square-foot tasting room, including seminars, and winemaker and winery owner-hosted gatherings.
Cellar appraisals, curbside pickup, home delivery within a 5-mile radius of the store, and the Corvain Wine System, a sampling technology that allows for the pouring of wine without removing a bottle’s cork, are also available.
Construction on the Old Woodward Cellar building — which features original concrete floors, an exposed hardwood ceiling, and modern design details — began in July. To contribute to the longevity of the wines, the space features shaded windows.
Ron and Roman, a Birmingham-based design firm, worked with Chesterfield-based BJ Construction to create the shop.
Old Woodward Cellar is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
