The 2015 Cadillac ATS is the first to feature a new first-to-market charging system that allows drivers and passengers to wirelessly charge their smartphones and mobile devices.

Developed by Van Buren Township-based Visteon Corp., the system addresses what a recent study conducted by the Wireless Power Consortium found to be the biggest complaint of smartphone users: battery life.

“Visteon’s wireless charging solution offers our customers immense flexibility,” says Albert Faraj, vice president of the Americas for Visteon’s electronics business. “It was designed so that it can be integrated into a number of locations within the cockpit, such as the center console or an area in the instrument panel.”

The charging solution is designed to accommodate different in-vehicle locations, so it can be used across multiple platforms and in different regions, Faraj says.

The system — which can connect with phones equipped with a certified Power Matters Alliance/Powermat or Wireless Power Consortium/Qi receiver — will also be added to the Cadillac CTS sports sedan this fall and to the Escalade SUV at the end of 2014.
