The Michigan Department of Transportation and global manufacturing company 3M today announced a collaboration on the nation’s first connected vehicle technology in a freeway work zone.

The project is part of a modernization effort taking place on I-75 in Oakland County, which is intended to increase safety measures for motorists and enable future vehicle-to-infrastructure and self-driving vehicle technologies.

3M is supplying advanced all-weather lane markings, retro reflective signs with smart technology, and dedicated short-range communication devices for vehicle-to-infrastructure communications for a three mile stretch of I-75.

“Technology is transforming not only how we live, but also how we drive,” says Kirk Steudle, MDOT’s director. “Michigan is globally recognized as the leader in automated vehicle research and technology, and through our Planet M initiative, we have solidified ourselves as the hub for mobility innovation.

“In the spirit of Michigan’s commitment to collaboration in the smart mobility sector, we are excited to partner with 3M on this project to make the concept of connected roadways and autonomous driving a reality.”
