The 2010 Detroit International Jazz Festival, to be held over Labor Day weekend in downtown Detroit, hosted the Detroit Jazz Fest Cruise on Aug. 19 on the Detroit River. Setting sail on the Ovation Yacht, guests were treated to a strolling supper, cocktails, and live jazz by Mack Avenue recording artist Hot Club of Detroit.
An impressive list of VIPs were on hand on July 28 to open the Detroit Seafood Market and PV Lounge in Paradise Valley (formerly Harmonie Park). The 170-seat bar and restaurant, owned by Kenny Akinwale and Executive Chef Leonardo Vulagi, offers such entrees as seafood fettuccine, broiled Florida snapper with crab meat, and broiled Chilean Sea Bass "Pan-Asian style."
The Women In Defense (WID) Michigan Chapter held an 18-hole scramble on July 23 at Cherry Creek Golf Course in Shelby Township to benefit the organization’s HORIZONS-Michigan scholarship program, which encourages females to pursue careers related to the national security and defense industries.
To help raise funds for the Michigan Chapter of the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund, which supports retired NFL players in need of financial and medical assistance, several current and former Detroit Lions players attended a golf outing on August 2 at Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak.
The Universal Watch & Jewelry Co. in downtown Birmingham held a book-signing reception on August 2 for author Elizabeth Doerr. Dozens of guests toured Universal Watch's new store while sampling wine and hors d'oeuvres. Doerr also signed copies of her new tome, "Twelve Faces of Time: Horological Virtuosos."
More than 225 classic cars, including a rare 1955 Chevrolet Biscayne that was saved from the scrap heap, were on display July 25 at the 2010 Concours d'Elegance at Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester Hills. The event — next year's offering will be held at the Inn at St. John's in Plymouth Township — included celebrity cars owned by the likes of Gene Autry, Mae West, and Clark Gable.
On July 29, dozens of sports luminaries hit the links at Lochmoor Country Club in Grosse Pointe Woods to raise funds for Little Caesars Pizza Bowl's Stocking Stuffer Program, which provides Detroit's youth an opportunity to participate in the upcoming bowl game at Ford Field in Detroit. Attendees included Barry Alvarez, Lloyd Carr, George Perles, and Dr. Jon Steinbrecher.
On the shores of Lake St. Clair at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, The March of Dimes held its "A One Day Caribbean Getaway" on July 21. The fundraiser, which included a strolling buffet, silent and live auctions, and entertainment, helped raise funds to prevent birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
On July 17, more than 200 boats set sail from Port Huron to Mackinac Island for the 86th running of a Michigan classic, hosted by Pure Michigan and the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit. The event was part of the Blue Water Fest, where thousands of fans were treated to entertainment, food, and tours of some of the boats lining the Black River and St. Clair River.
On July 19, sportscaster George Blaha hosted the High Hopes Golf Invitational at Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Township. The event, which included 18 holes of golf and a tribute dinner, benefited Vista Maria, a nonprofit in Dearborn Heights that offers victimized girls and women treatment programs.
