DETROIT — The Rhonda Walker Foundation is hosting its annual Give and Get Fit 5K Run, Walk, and 10K Race Sunday at 8:00 a.m., along the Detroit Riverfront at Rivard Plaza.

Now in its fifth year, more than 600 participants are expected to run, walk and race along Detroit’s Riverwalk, the Dequindre Cut Greenway path and downtown neighborhoods in support of the Rhonda Walker Foundation’s health and wellness initiatives and Girls into Woman programs.

“Michigan has been ranked among the nation’s most obese states,” says Rhonda Walker, founder and president of the Rhonda Walker Foundation. “Childhood obesity is a major concern for us at the Rhonda Walker Foundation so our goal this year with Give and Get Fit event is to offer some awareness (of) this growing problem in our communities in metro Detroit.”

This day also benefits Rhonda Walker Foundation’s Girls into Women Program a five-year program for teen girls starting in the 8th grade and continuing into high school until graduation. Over this five-year period the girls meet monthly for workshops, seminars, retreats, field trips and camps that focus on career and personal development. In addition, every girl is paired with an adult mentor who works with their mentee through the duration of the program.

Participants in Give and Get Fit 5K Run and 10K Race will also have an opportunity take part in fitness classes from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. from “gentle flow” yoga, Pilates by Body Pure and a session on “Boyo.” In addition, participants will have an opportunity to visit the health fair area featuring various wellness exhibitors featuring the latest trends, fitness and nutrition information and food stations set up along the Rivard Park riverwalk area.

The Rhonda Walker Foundation was founded in 2003 and since then, 100 percent of its teens that have completed the five-year Girls into Women program graduate from high school and enroll in college and 95 percent of the students attend Detroit Public Schools.
