Ascension’s St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit has been verified as an Adult Level One Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. The announcement was made Tuesday.
The American College of Surgeons is the national organization responsible for evaluating and verifying hospitals as designated trauma centers. St. John Hospital joins four other Ascension hospitals across the country verified as Level One Trauma Centers.
“Achieving Level One Trauma Center verification reflects the importance of the services that St. John Hospital provides to the community and region,” says Joseph Buck, trauma medical director at the hospital. “Our trauma care team is comprised of the some of the most dedicated and skilled nurses and specialists in the region. This designation reflects our system-wide commitment to provide the highest quality care to patients.”
Trauma centers function as regional resources that are tertiary care facilities central to the trauma system. Trauma services at St. John Hospital include 24-hour in-house coverage by board-certified trauma surgeons.
In turn, registered nurses who receive specialty trauma training, social workers and case managers, dieticians, chaplains, and physical, occupational, and respiratory therapists, are available to work with trauma patients and their families.
St. John Providence Children’s Hospital, located within St. John Hospital, maintained requirements to be re-verified as a Level Two Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons.
Ascension operates 15 hospitals and hundreds of related health care facilities in Michigan that employ more than 26,000 associates. It is the world’s largest Catholic health system and the largest nonprofit health system in the U.S.
Nationwide, Ascension includes about 150,000 associates and 36,000 aligned providers. Its health care division operates 2,500 sites of care, including 141 hospitals and more than 30 senior living facilities, in 22 states and Washington, D.C.
