Lumen Detroit, a new restaurant from the owners of Big Rock Chophouse in Birmingham and other local eateries, opens today in Beacon Park, an urban park at Cass and Grand River avenues. The park was developed by DTE Energy, which has its headquarters just west of the urban square, with programming overseen by the Downtown Detroit Partnership.
Located at 1903 Grand River, Lumen offers 4,000 square feet of space and features an open kitchen, indoor seating for 125 people, outdoor seating for 150 guests, a 45-seat rooftop deck complemented by sustainable greenery, a large bar, and sliding glass doors.
The design and construction team includes Touloukian Touloukian Inc., an architectural firm in Boston, Saroki Architecture in downtown Birmingham, Roncelli Inc. in Sterling Heights, and Kelly Building and Development Co. in Birmingham.
The menu features classic entrees with a twist such as steak and frites (NY Strip) served with béarnaise butter, PEI mussels served three ways — arabiatta, white wine and chorizo, or green curry — pan seared salmon, chicken, Lumen burger, rustic tomato with thin pasta, and the Michigan pork chop (schnitzel). Entrée prices range from $11 to $27.
Appetizers include chicken wings, crab cake, mac and cheese, sausage duo, cheese and charcuterie, farmer’s marker bowl, and cured fish. There’s also a variety of fresh salads including garden and grains, Asian, Brussel sprouts, and Caesar, along with house made soups.
The restaurant is owned and operated by Norm and Bonnie LePage and their son,
Scott, and his wife, Susanne LePage. In addition to Big Rock Chophouse, the LePage’s own
Clubhouse BFD in Rochester Hills and Griffin Claw Brewing Co. in Birmingham. A second Griffin Claw location is scheduled to open in Rochester Hills later this spring. The family also is scouting another location for a restaurant in Detroit.

The restaurant is open for dinner, and plans to add lunch service and a weekend brunch later in the year. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
