Four Michigan hospitals have been named among the top 100 health institutions in the nation, according to an annual study conducted by Ann Arbor-based IBM Watson Health.

Providence Park Hospital in Southfield was recognized as one of the best major teaching hospitals, while Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe was named one of the best teaching hospitals in general. Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville and Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital in Zeeland were named two of the best small community hospitals.

The study identifies top-performing hospitals in the U.S. based on overall organizational performance. It has been conducted every year since 1993.

IBM Watson Health’s study shows that hospitals that made its top 100 list have better survival rates, fewer complications and infections in patients, shorter lengths of stay for patients, shorter emergency room wait times, lower inpatient expenses, higher profit margins, and higher patient satisfaction.

“The country’s best hospitals have proven that an unrelenting focus on quality, supported by constant measurement against peer performance benchmarks, can drive improved outcomes while reducing costs and growing profit margins,” says Jean Chenoweth, a senior vice president of IBM Watson Health. “Congratulations to this 25th anniversary class of 100 Top Hospitals who have helped raise the bar for healthcare in the U.S. and improve the healthcare experiences of the people in their communities.”

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, IBM Watson Health researchers evaluated 2,740 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. All research was based on the following public data sets: Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply for awards, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
