General Motors Co. in Detroit is darkening its palette with a new pair of SUVs, the 2019 Terrain and Acadia Black Editions.

The change comes after internal sales data showed that about one in five new SUV buyers spends additional money to personalize the appearance of new vehicles. This edition was in response to the desire for a blacked-out effect.

The SUVs include darkened exterior treatments and more choices that include color-matched, chromed and Denali appearances. Options for the two include black aluminum wheels, darkened grille inserts and black surround, black mirror caps, and roof rails.

There are also black headlamp and tail lamp details. Each SUV is offered in five exterior colors.

“The new Terrain and Acadia Black Editions … capture the identity of the GMC brand by offering a bold and confident exterior appearance,” says Duncan Aldred, vice president of global GMC. “They give our customers more choices within the premium SUV segment to distinguish their vehicle and themselves.”

The brand saw its best sales in 12 years in 2017.
