Last week, General Motors Chairman and CEO Mary Barra spoke at the annual CERAWeek energy conference in Houston.

The CEO of Detroit-based GM gave opening remarks, followed by a Q&A session.

In her opening remarks, Barra talked about the goals of GM, primarily the company’s endgame of an all-electric, zero emissions future.

“We want cleaner air to preserve our planet for future generations, which is why today’s cars are more efficient and why more of us embrace environmentally conscious options,” says Barra. “Today I want to focus on zero emission, and how our electric vehicle strategy will get us there.”

Citing models like the Chevrolet Bolt EV, Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, and the Cadillac CT6 plug-in, Barra made the case that GM is on the forefront of the electric car revolution. The CEO also says that GM is on its way to bringing at least 20 new all-electric models to market by 2023.

Barra also called for larger tax credits from the government if electric vehicles are going to continue to gain a foothold in the U.S.

“The current federal tax credit helps make electric vehicles more desirable and affordable,” she says. “And we appreciate that it was retained in the tax reform law. However, we feel tax credits should be expanded so our customers continue to receive the benefit going forward.”

Barra says that more electric options, increased tax benefits for electric vehicles buyers and greater access to charging stations are just the first steps in GM’s quest to become a zero emissions car maker.
