The Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) on Wednesday announced the return of the Detroit Cycling Championship, set to take place Saturday, July 14. The event will appear on USA Cycling’s National Pro Road Tour calendar. This year’s event includes a new course near Detroit’s Beacon Park and the headquarters of DTE Energy.
This is the race’s second year.
“Getting the nod from USA Cycling to add the Detroit Cycling Championship to its prestigious National Pro Road Tour is an honor that affirms the city’s ability to host a wide range of world-class sporting events,” says Steve Mellos, DAC president. “With a new course centered on Beacon Park, Detroit is again set to shine, and the DAC Foundation is privileged to be leading the effort.”
The race is sanctioned by USA Cycling and attracts nationally recognized racers competing for a combined $45,000 in cash prizes and primes. The championship drew more than 300 participants in 2017 and will again include Category I-V men’s and women’s races, a kid’s race, a military veteran race, and a healthy living exposition.
“To be part of the Pro Road Tour and receive an A+ rating from USA Cycling is a big win for us as we enter our second year,” says Rob Barr, athletic director at the DAC. “The Detroit Cycling Championship provides a combination of competition and athleticism for riders while offering fans an action-packed day watching some of the world’s top cyclists compete for one of the top purses in U.S. cycling.”
Participation fees range from free to $65. Register here by May 15 to save $15, June 15 to save $10, and July 9 to save $5. Onsite registration begins at 8 a.m. on race day.
The event is free for non-participating spectators. Admission to a VIP tent at Beacon Park is $75 and includes premium viewing, food, and beverages.
