Auburn Hills automaker Fiat Chrysler Automotive today introduced the 2019 Jeep Cherokee, with an updated athletic design and a new 2.0 liter direct-injection inline four-cylinder engine for increased performance and fuel efficiency, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) at Cobo Center in Detroit.
The vehicle’s evolution offers increased interior comfort and convenience, independent front and rear suspension systems with increased torsional stiffness, three distinct engine offerings , a nine speed transmission, and more than 80 safety and security features.
“The addition of our new fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbo engine make the new 2019 Jeep Cherokee even more desirable in the mid-size SUV segment,” says Mike Manley, head of Jeep Brand for FCA Global. “In addition, Cherokee builds on its benchmark 4×4 capability and on-road dynamics with refinement and style, a host of new attributes, powertrains, and the latest technology that is perfectly situated for consumers worldwide.”
The new Cherokee features an enhanced exterior design with new fascia, a lightweight hood, LED headlamps, daylight running lamps, and signature Jeep styling. The updated interior includes a driver-oriented cockpit with storage features, navigation and safety technology, and eight standard airbags. Rear cargo capacity has also increased more than three inches in width for a total of more than 27 cubic feet. The vehicle features two new color themes, ergonomically designed heated and power adjustable seats, and more aesthetic improvements.
The 2-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine is rated at 270 horsepower and 295 pounds per foot of torque. Benefits of the engine stop-start technology include low emissions, quick 0-60 miles per hour launch performance, and enhanced drivability.
As Jeep’s newest midsize SUV, the Cherokee competes in the U.S’ largest SUV market with sales of more than 2 million annually. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is available in five different trim configurations (Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, Overland, and Trail Rated Trailhawk) and is manufactured at the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois. The vehicle will be in Jeep showrooms during the first quarter of 2018.
