Detroit-based leather and lifestyle-goods manufacturer Shinola today announced the Jackie Robinson Limited Edition Timepiece, the fifth installment in the company’s Great American Series, a collection of watches that honors those who helped shape American culture.
Robinson is credited with breaking the color barrier in professional baseball. He joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in the spring of 1947, becoming the first African American baseball play in Major League Baseball.
“Jackie Robinson’s commitment to equal rights and justice are values that we, as a company, also champion,” says Jacques Panis, president of Shinola. “We are inspired by his skill and courage, and are proud to honor his contributions to our country in a meaningful way.”
The watch features a 42mm stainless steel chronograph and a midnight blue dial with a date indicator, as well as a brown alligator strap with blue lining. Shinola’s signature case back displays the number 42, in honor of Robinson’s baseball jersey number, which has been retired league-wide.
The watch will be limited to 442 pieces and sold as part of a packaged gift set that includes a mini pennant, a customized scorebook, three pins, and four postcards. The set retails for $1,500 and is available online and in Shinola stores beginning April 15.
Purchases also includes membership into The Foundry, a private collector’s club established exclusively for owners of limited-edition Shinola products.
