Grand Rapids-based regional American supercenter Meijer today announced a $375 million investment in new and remodeled stores across its six-state footprint, with plans to construct seven new supercenters and 22 different remodel projects throughout the Midwest.
Construction of new Meijer supercenters is currently planned for Escanaba and Sault Saint Marie, as well as several locations in Wisconsin and Indiana. The company also has plans to “aggressively remodel” stores in Detroit, Cincinnati, Louisville, and suburban Chicago. Six Meijer supercenters in Michigan are slated for renovation, including in Mount Pleasant, Commerce Township, and Algoma Township, which are planning major remodels.
“These projects represent an investment in our customers, team members and the local communities that have supported us for so long,” says Rick Keyes, Meijer’s president and CEO. “We’re also excited that at long last we’ll cross the bridge and open our first stores in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.”
Keyes adds that Meijer’s continued focus on remodeling reflects the company’s commitment to providing customers with “the best shopping experience,” and means that by the end of 2017, Meijer will have remodeled 90 stores since 2010. The depth of the remodel depends on several factors, including improved store layouts, expanded grocery, health, and beauty sections, as well as lighting, heating, refrigeration, and parking lot improvements. Additionally, Meijer plans to introduce newer technology in key areas during the remodel process to create more energy efficient stores.
