More than 200 faculty and staff members from Southfield’s Lawrence Technological University gathered on Tuesday, March 4 to hear university president Virinder Moudgil give the school’s annual “State of the University” speech.
During his remarks, Moudgil said LTU will begin construction on a fourth residence hall immediately after commencement activities on May 6, and that more than 1,100 students are expected to live there when the dormitory is completed in Fall 2018. He added that the move is part of LTU’s long-term plan to become a residential campus setting. LTU is also in the process of installing a faster Internet access system that requires 42 miles of cable installation.
Mougdil also noted LTU’s strides in the sponsored corporate research industry, saying they “are now a comprehensive university with teaching and research in balance,” and that applied research is one of the universities strengths.
Mougdil also reviewed new university programs, including a nursing degree in partnership with St. John Providence that will eventually bring 120 new students to LTU’s campus. He also mentioned the university’s addition of football team, which is expected to begin varsity competition in 2019, is expected to draw hundreds of students to the school.
He also referenced LTU’s relationship with the City of Southfield, which he called “stronger than ever,” referencing the LTU collaboratory business incubator, which has served 50 companies and created 15 new companies.
Founded in 1932, LTU is a private university and currently offers more than 100 programs through the doctoral level in its colleges of architecture and design, arts and sciences, engineering, and management.
