Detroit-based Kraemer Design Group (KDG), an architecture, interior design, and creative firm, has been chosen as architect of record, as well as the historic consultant on the former Detroit Free Press building renovations. Located at 321 W. Lafayette, the building will require structural updates, complete masonry restoration, new energy-efficient windows, and new interior design to repurpose the 271,858-square-foot, 14-story structure into a mixed-use building with retail, office, and residential space.
KDG will collaborate with Bedrock, the building’s new owners, as they work to preserve historical details while modernizing a structure left vacant for more than 19 years. The building is preliminarily slated to open in 2020.
“The Detroit Free Press building is one of the last remaining abandoned high rise buildings in the downtown core, and Kraemer Design Group is thrilled to have another opportunity to restore a historic landmark building in Detroit,” says Brian Rebain, principal of KDG. “Our portfolio of historic rehab work is extensive, so we understand the challenges and preservation techniques needed to maintain historic elements while adding modern amenities. We look forward to working with Bedrock and our other partners to bring this building back to life.”
With more than 20 years of experience, KDG’s portfolio includes preservation of the David Whitney building and the Lofts of Merchants Row in Detroit and the Durant Hotel in Flint. The company was also part of the team on The Albert at Capitol Park and Broderick Tower, and is currently working on the Shinola Hotel project on Woodward Avenue.
