General Motors Co. today announced two new all-electric vehicles will be introduced based on on-the-road research from the Chevrolet Bolt EV over the next 18 months.

The vehicles will be the first of at least 20 new all-electric vehicles to be launched by 2023 as part of the automaker’s commitment to zero emissions, crashes, and congestion.

“General Motors believes in an all-electric future,” says Mark Reuss, General Motors’ executive vice president of product development, purchasing, and supply chain. “Although that future won’t happen overnight, GM is committed to driving increased usage and acceptance of electric vehicles through no-compromise solutions that meet our customers’ needs.”

Given customers’ needs, achieving a zero emissions future will require hydrogen fuel cell electric technology in addition to electric batteries, depending on a vehicle’s requirements, Reuss says.

GM also introduced the Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure (SURUS), a fuel cell powered, four-wheel steer concept vehicle on a heavy-duty truck frame driven by two electric motors. SURUS’ capability and flexible architecture could allow it to be used as a zero-emissions delivery vehicle, truck, or ambulance.
