As Amazon weighs where to build its second North American headquarters (H2Q), Troy-based G2 Consulting will provide construction engineering services for an 850,000-square-foot Amazon distribution center currently underway in Shelby Township.

G2 Consulting’s is currently providing the same services at a similar Amazon site in Romulus. Atlanta-based Seefried Industrial Properties is the developer for the Romulus site and Ryan Cos. of Chicago is the general contractor for both sites.

G2 Consulting’s work on the new centers will include soil and materials inspections, concrete testing, structural steel evaluation, and flatness and levelness of the warehouse floors so that robots and other equipment can function efficiently.

“These are huge projects on an unusually fast track,” says Jason Stoops, G2 Ann Arbor’s project manager. “With the incredible growth Amazon is experiencing in its business, the company needs geographically relevant distribution and they can’t waste time getting it built.”

Construction plans for the Shelby Township development site calls for pouring between 500 and 1,000 yards of concrete per day.

Amazon has built or will soon add three fulfillment centers and one sortation facility in Brownstown Township, Livonia, Romulus, and Shelby Township, which will collectively employ 3,500 workers. It also has an office at the 150 W. Jefferson Building in downtown Detroit for 300 employees that will expand to 600 employees over the next year or so.

Detroit also is bidding to land Amazon’s H2Q. Based in Seattle, the company’s second headquarters will employ up to 50,000 workers and generate $5 billion in spending. A decision on H2Q is expected next year.
