Non-toxic blow dry salon Detroit Blows has opened for business on the ground floor of the Z-Lot at 1232 Library St. The more than 2,000-square-foot salon will offer an array of beauty services. It will also be an impact-driven retail footprint by offering a rotating lineup of socially conscious brands from Detroit-based and global product makers.
Detroit Blows features a single service, dual-process model, incorporating both traditional and roller set blowouts. Designed to appeal to the client on-the-go, the salon also plans to introduce express manicures and pedicures, makeup application, and eyebrow waxing — all using non-toxic products.
Co-founders and native Detroiters Nia Batts and Katy Cockrel will designate $1 from each blow dry service and a percentage of retail sales to Detroit Grows, a philanthropic arm of the business which aims to provide micro-grants to other Detroit-based female entrepreneurs and support local programs to help women enter or re-enter the workforce.
“We couldn’t be more excited to bring this dream to life and have the opportunity to share it with the community,” says Batts, Detroit Blows’ co-founder and CEO. “We’ve been building this concept for the past two years, and we’re really proud to have realized a vision that not only fills a void in the market, but is intentional and accessible for clients of all ethnicities and hair types.”
In order to democratize the pricing structure, Detroit Blows’ blowouts are priced at $35 for hair that is shoulder length or above and $40 for hair below the shoulder.
“Health and wellness, accessibility, and the notion of doing well by doing good were all top of mind as we built this business,” says Cockrel, Detroit Blows’ co-founder. “As longtime consumers of the service in markets outside of Detroit, we knew that there was an opportunity to build here at home, and to do it in a way that would allow us to make an impact.”
Detroit Blows is open Monday-Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. In celebration of its debut, Detroit Blows is offering its first 100 clients a complimentary deep conditioning treatment with their first blow out.
