Next spring, Buddy’s Pizza is bringing its signature Detroit-style square pizza to the Detroit Zoo. The zoo, which is Michigan’s largest paid family attraction, will welcome Buddy’s to a new, 4,434-square-foot eatery, which will seat 155 guests between seats indoors, on an outdoor patio, and a rooftop deck.

While Buddy’s original square pizzas will anchor the menu, the restaurant will also serve pizza by the slice, gluten-free pizza, antipasto salads, and cold beverages.

“As the home of the original Detroit-style pizza, we’re thrilled for the opportunity to serve our pies inside one of the region’s most beloved cultural institutions,” says West Pikula, Buddy’s Pizza vice president of operations. “As we prepare for this new location, we look forward to giving our existing fans and zoo patrons a unique way to dine on our square pizza.”

The Detroit Zoo site, which will be located just west of the Ford Education Center, and offer views of the Rackham Fountain and its polar bears statue. It will be the first Buddy’s Pizza within an attraction. The new pizza place will join two other popular Detroit-area food mainstays at the zoo: American Coney Island and Detroit Popcorn.

“The Detroit Zoo and Buddy’s Pizza are two southeast Michigan icons that have been serving families in the community for decades,” says Ron Kagan, executive director and CEO for the Detroit Zoological Society. “We’re excited to add this exceptional product to our dining options.”

The new Buddy’s will be built according to Green Restaurant Association standards – incorporating such eco-friendly practices as water and energy efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, and sustainable furnishings and building materials.
