An estate sale and auction will take place at the Motown Mansion, the home once owned by Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr., from Oct. 12-14. Birmingham-based estate sale company Aaron’s Estate Sales will be facilitating the sale and auction.
“This home is an important part of the fabric of the City of Detroit, and the sale will allow Motown fans from Detroit to Dubai to add a permanent piece to their own collection,” says Cynthia F. Reaves, owner of the Motown Mansion. “The scope of the collection includes small items as well as impressive collection pieces.”
Located at 918 W. Boston Blvd. (northeast corner of W. Boston and Hamilton Avenue) in Detroit’s Boston-Edison neighborhood, Gordy Jr. occupied the 10,500-square-foot home from 1967-1969. After purchasing the home in 2002, Reaves, an attorney who lives down the street, has undertaken several restorations to preserve the property and much of its contents. She also hosted numerous special events.
The three-day event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 12-14 and will feature a wide variety of collectible and everyday merchandise including household goods, antiques, and Motown Records Co. items acquired by Reaves, such as original pressings of Motown singles and hundreds of 45 records from Gordy’s record storage.
The live online auction will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 in the mansion’s neighboring athletic house. The event will include high-end antiques, historical objects, and Motown memorabilia and will be open to international bidders.
Motown artists including Duke Fakir of The Four Tops, The Vandells, Kim Weston, Joe Harris, and members of The Funk Brothers and The Contours will also be in attendance on Thursday and Friday to sign purchases.
All items purchased at the sale will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Admission to the estate sale is $5 per person at the door, and additional information can be found here.
