The retail property owned by Beaumont Health at the southwest corner of 13 Mile and Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak has been named Woodward Corners by Beaumont and has signed its first two retailers.
Wahlburgers and New Order Coffee will both operate space in the 117,000-square-foot, 16-acre development. Construction is currently underway, following demolition of several aging retail and residential buildings on the site.
“The new name ‘Woodward Corners by Beaumont’ pays tribute to Woodward Avenue as an iconic heritage roadway while highlighting the property’s linkage to Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak,” says Carolyn Wilson, Beaumont Health’s executive vice president and COO. “We are excited to bring new life and a new look to this corner, guided by ideas put forth by more than 6,000 community residents, our employees, and patients through a survey.”
Beaumont has owned the property since the 1980s and the redevelopment plan calls for six buildings on the property, including a grocery store, a potential five-story hotel, and a variety of restaurants, other retail offerings, green space, landscape gardens, and community gathering areas.
Boston-based Wahlburgers and Detroit’s New Order Coffee are the first retailers to secure space in the new development. Woodward Corners will connect with the Beaumont Hospital campus through accessible walking paths to enhance the surrounding community and the 13,000 patients who visit Beaumont daily.
“Our history and future as a destination medicine center means that we care for patients and their families from across the region and from states across the U.S.,” says Rosanna Morris, president of Beaumont Hospital. “Woodward Corners by Beaumont will significantly enhance the experiences of those we care for by providing a hotel, grocer, dining, and retail within walking distance of the hospital. Those benefits of housing, respite, or relaxation will be new and of incredible value, not only to our patients and families, but to our community.”
The $32.8 million development will create hundreds of construction jobs and is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
