Delphi Automotive, an automotive technology supplier with its North American headquarters in Troy, has partnered with Mobileye, a supplier of vision-based sensing systems with U.S. offices in Jericho, N.Y., to develop an autonomous driving system that is expected to be production ready by 2019.
“This partnership will allow us to give our customers an increased level of automated capabilities faster and more cost effectively,” says Kevin Clark, president and CEO of Delphi. “The collective expertise of our two organizations will accelerate the creation of new approaches and capabilities that would likely not have been possible working alone.”
He says the automated driving system will be based on key technologies from each company, including Mobileye’s Eye Q 4/5 System on a Chip and Road Experience Management system, which will be used for real-time mapping and vehicle localization, and Delphi’s automated driving software algorithms from its Ottomatika acquisition, and its multidomain controller with a full camera, radar, and LiDAR suite.
In addition, teams from both companies will develop a sensor fusion technology as well as a human-like “driving policy” for the system that will yield capabilities necessary for negotiating with other human drivers and pedestrians in complex urban scenes.
Headquartered in Gillingham, U.K., Delphi operates technical centers, manufacturing sites, and customer support services in 44 countries.
